A fatal accident occurred on I 17 northbound on the edge of the Mogollon Rim last week. A pickup truck was speeding, lost control on the slick ice, hit a small sedan, flipped over, and burst into flames. Four landscapers pulled over and risked their lives trying to rescue the driver from the wreckage but were forced to retreat to the side of the road. One of them was crying.

When driving in snow, go slow. Do not make sudden moves. Steer gently. Ease on a off the gas pedal and the brakes. Coast whenever possible. If your vehicle allows you to downshift into a lower gear, or if you have four wheel drive, engage it. If you begin to skid or slide, turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid. Avoid overcorrecting.

The most important thing to remember in snow is that just because the road has been plowed or cindered does not make it safer. In fact, it can make it worse. Most vehicles have better traction in snow that on the slick icy base layer that skims the road. When driving on a plowed surface, be sure to give your vehicle extra room to maneuver and don't tailgate. If you drive a pickup truck, weigh down the back with sandbags. Weight helps considerably when driving in snow. So does going slow. The driver of the truck in the accident lost his life because he was in a hurry.

Vehicle maintenance is key to surviving icy and snowy road conditions. Tires with thick or chunky tread that are properly balanced and full of air are the first line of defense. Make sure the fluids can withstand colder temperatures. There are usually very few complaints when it comes to living in Arizona. For about eight
months of the year we have weather that is the envy of most of America. However, there are
a couple times of year where we have monsoon season. It is during these times that Arizona
residents get to experience something other parts of the country take for granted – driving in
the rain.

Here are four easy to follow tips about driving in the Arizona rain.

Slow down. Increased speed also increases the risk of hydroplaning. The direct contact
between the tires and the road decreases at greater speeds.

Don’t make sudden moves. To slow down, ease off the gas pedal before braking to
reduce the risk of spinning out. If necessary, shift the gears down. If you do spin out, gently
steer into the skid and don’t over correct. When changing lanes, ease over to the other lane
and leave several car lengths between you and the car in front of you.

Leave plenty of room. The National Highway Safety Administration recommends leaving
two car lengths behind the vehicle in front during optimal condition and at least five car
lengths during decreased visibility. The message: don’t tailgate. Reduced visibility and
traction also reduces the ability of both car and driver to react to a situation.

Check your tires and glass. Worn or bald tires reduce traction and reaction times
significantly. In the event you have to stop suddenly tires that are worn badly will not react
to your brakes as well as they should. Also, replace any cracked or chipped windshield, as
your view and visibility can be reduced to a point where it is not safe to drive.
